INTENT

​

At St Thomas we have three main intentions;

​

Intention 1

To follow a PSHE (Personal, Social and health education) curriculum; which develops learning and helps children develop knowledge and skills. Children can access the wider curriculum and be prepared to be a global citizen now and in the future. Children will know more, remember more and understand more.

Our curriculum will give children appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding to fulfil the duties of the National Curriculum and will provide a balanced and broadly-based curriculum which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils and prepares them for the opportunities and responsibilities and experiences for later life.

Intention 2

To provide a PSHE curriculum that incorporates the understanding of RSE (Relationships and Sex education). As a result; children will know how to be safe and to understand and develop healthy relationships both now and in their future lives. The RSE programme of work will enable pupils to explore the complexity of the relationships they will have both now and throughout their lives.

Intention 3

Our curriculum will incorporate the understanding of Mental Well-being .Children have more positive mental health, have an increased understanding and awareness of common mental health issues. In addition we will;

Provide support to staff working with young people with mental health issues

Provide support to students suffering mental ill health and their peers and parents or carers.

IMPLEMENTATION

 

Our PSHE curriculum has three core learning themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world. It also incorporates the RSE and Mental Well-being policies.

In the classroom, we follow the school’s bespoke topic cycle where subjects and themes have been carefully chosen to ensure maximum engagement and enjoyment. PSHE themes will be implemented and taught as part of these topics. In addition PSHE will also be taught as a stand-alone subject, in particular when teaching SRE.

Alongside this at St Thomas we have;

PSHE Working Walls and displays throughout the school. These focus on key aspects of PSHE and display the key vocabulary, themes and work covered. In addition we will ensure the key words and themes are discussed across the curriculum so that they are embedded in the children’s and staffs vocabulary and mind-set.

Whole school, key stage and class assemblies are used to deliver the key messages and develop understanding of the key themes being covered that week.

IMPACT

​

At St Thomas, we use a variety of methods to assess the impact of our PSHE curriculum. These include; summative assessments, book scrutiny, lesson observations and pupil surveys. Class Teachers deliver the lessons and curriculum whilst following the skills progression document, they use AFL; providing effective feedback to learners, actively involving the children and young people in their own learning, they adjust their teaching to take account of the results of assessment and they recognise the profound influence assessment has on the motivation and self-esteem of learners, both of which are crucial influences on learning.

 

Through these methods we expect that the children: will know more and remember more about PSHE, they will recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty. The children will demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school – attendance will be at least in-line with national and behaviour will be good and the large majority of children will achieve age related expectations across the wider curriculum in addition to the core subjects.
